At the June general membership meeting, the Local 812 Scholarship Committee celebrated our scholarship recipients for the 2023-2024 academic year. The union’s all volunteer scholarship committee has awarded more than 1 million dollars to the children of Local 812 members over the past 19 years.
President Vitta chaired a special membership meeting featuring updates by 812 pension attorney Walter Kane, and fund actuaries Alan Sofge and Jacob Pine. Local 812 Attorneys Jim Green and Barry Levy also participated.

Officer nominations were held at the October 8th General Membership meeting. Members of the current Executive Board were nominated without opposition. With no contested races for any office, the leadership team was elected by acclamation.

Local 812 shop stewards and key members gathered in late August for a three-day educational seminar. The event provided a forum for exchanging ideas and experiences, discussing best practices and learning more about the industry, union movement and Local 812’s health and pension benefits.

After having to cancel the annual seminar last year because of COVID, Local 812 Stewards, members, officers and staff were pleased to be together once again to share knowledge, hone their skills and discuss the Local’s challenges and opportunities over the coming year.
Several special guests and allies addressed the group, including Teamster Joint Council 73 (New Jersey) President Al Rispoli, who welcomed us to Atlantic City. Teamster General President Hoffa sent a video greeting , thanking Local 812 essential workers for their perseverance and sacrifice during the pandemic. After a half-century of dedication to Local 812 and Coca-Cola, Mario Alvarez recently retired. A Coke mechanic, Brother Alvarez served as a Trustee on the Local 812 board for 21 years. He served as a Shop Steward at the Bronx Coke Facility beginning in 1987. He plans to relax more in retirement, but wants everyone to know that he’s “Here for the Brotherhood” whenever needed.
A true trade unionist, Mario always welcomed new members and stood ready to assist our union.

New York, NY – Teamsters Local 812 member John Vargas, 46, has been on the job for more than a decade. He works as a deliveryman for Union Beer in Secaucus, New Jersey. He’s also been a shop steward for about six years.
Vargas works mainly in the South area of Brooklyn, which includes areas such as Coney Island and Sheepshead Bay. His shift is punishing. It begins at 5 a.m., and ends a little before 5 p.m., but he works for four days and has three days off. His commute is difficult – he lives in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
